Every businessperson knows that a constant in-flow of customers is the only thing that guarantees a constant in-flow of revenue. Without that, the business will suffer and even die. Having marketing success therefore results in having business success, all things being equal!
As a marketer and a Marketing trainer, I have noticed over the years that marketing is not as complex as many tend to make it look. If you want to enjoy continuous patronage at whatever it is you do, the following steps will help you.

Marketing Success Step 1: Dream it
It pays to just sit back, relax and let your mind wander off with thoughts of possibilities. It also helps to create motivation. So, sit down and dream. How many clients would you like to patronize you this year, month, week or day? How are they feeling about doing business with you? How much money is pouring into your account as a result of their grateful patronage? What are you buying yourself as a result of this marketing success? Dream it all. After all, dreaming is free of charge. You won’t have to pay for it.
Marketing Success Step 2: Set Goals
After taking a while to just dream and yes build castles in the sky, take some time out to set your goals. What quantity of your product do you want to sell on a daily, weekly, monthly or yearly basis. Be specific. How many prospects do you need to speak with to achieve that goal? You goal must be SMART and D! Don’t forget that acronym. The goal must be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound and Documented. Goals are great motivators when they are SMART and documented. I encourage you to set yours today and start working.
Marketing Success Step 3: Talk to People Everyday
You need to step out and talk to people after writing down your goals. If you do not put your goals to work, your dreams will be frustrated. When I used to do street to street marketing, my goal was to get 10 “yes contacts” per day. That means 10 people must tell me something positive that shows that they might pay. That includes “let me think about it”, “let me discuss it with my spouse” and so on. I used to sometimes speak with up to 50 people in a day to get that. Step out!
Marketing Success Step 4: Deliver When Something Comes Through
When a “yes contact” finally makes an order, give them exceptional service. Make it memorable. The industry you are in does not matter. If you do that, the customer will talk about you. When they do, you will naturally get referrals. Whenever I am invited by an organization to train their staff on Customer Service, I always ensure that the scope of the training is beyond that. In the 21st Century, you don’t want to remain at Customer Service. You need to take it to “Legendary Service”. If you can’t achieve legendary, do “exceptional.” This guarantees referrals almost all the time.
Marketing Success Step 5: Keep Talking to People
Do not stop talking to people. Many marketers think a time comes that you “graduate” from speaking to people. No! You have to keep meeting contacts and telling them what you have for them. After all, if you don’t talk about your business, who will? Create avenues that will help you to keep doing this. Attend networking events. Join clubs and societies. Attend trainings and exhibitions. Just ensure you are always on “people’s face” all the time. Become so known for what you sell to the point that you will always pop up in someone’s mind whenever a need for it arises.

Marketing Success Step 6: Keep learning
There is never a time that you will know it all. Professors learn till they breathe their last. I have written a Marketing book that has a brilliant endorsement by the sales guru himself – Brian Tracy. Yet I keep learning the subject. Why? Knowledge is progressive. The more confident you are, the more the prospect will believe in your product/service. Buy books, attend webinars, go for coaching. Just keep learning!
Being successful in marketing has nothing to do with knowing too much. You can know all the principles and fail. The power is in consistency. Consistently practice the above steps and success will surely come to you.
